Worthington was founded in 1803 by a Connecticut businessman and modeled after a New England town. The village of Old Worthington maintains its old Connecticut character today, with its picturesque business disctrict, large Village Green and small-town atmosphere.
Although the city itself is still relatively small (only 5.6 square miles), the Worthington community and school district have grown around it to a population of 50,000. The school system is considered excellent and has 12 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 high schools, as well as an alternative high school. Its newest high school, Worthington Kilbourne, was recently rated #1 by Columbus Monthly Magazine.
Worthington's Parks and Recreation Department oversees 13 parks and offers a wide variety of programs ranging from swimming, tennis, summer day camps for children, and exercise classes to crafts, dance and free summer concerts on the Village Green.
The new Griswold Center for seniors was completed in 1994. The city also attracts many visitors to its festivals, such as Worthington Market Day, and to its Saturday morning farmers' market during the spring and summer.
Homes in the Worthington area range from $90,000 to more than $650,000, with the majority falling in the $125,000-$400,000 category. Buyers can choose from a
wide variety of properties, from century-old homes in Old Worthington to mid-priced family-style 2-stories to stately executive homes in the newer subdivisions. |
